Oakley Frost will be Honored by Village on August 8th..

Oakley Frost NORTH BENNINGTON - Dr. Oakley Frost will be this year's honoree for North Bennington's fifth annual Living History Day to be held Aug. 8 in front of Powers Market.

Organizers choose a local resident each year to be recognized for their achievements and contributions to the local community. The two-hour event offers the public a chance to share stories about the honoree and spend time with neighbors and friends. It also features music and refreshments.

This year's celebration of Frost takes place from noon to 2 p.m., and is free and open to all ages.

Frost was born in Middletown Springs and moved to Bennington soon after. He attending the Old Bennington School, and then high school in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Frost then graduated from Williams College and Albany Medical School.

Served in the Navy

Frost served as a medical officer in the Navy and spent time in the Mediterranean on the USS Boston. In 1965 Frost returned to Bennington to work at what is now known as Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. He worked at as a local doctor for 40 years before retiring in 2005.

Frost's children kept the family quite active in the local community for several decades. He was involved with the Boy Scouts and was an Eagle Scout himself, served on the local school board and was a founder of the Mount Anthony Youth Athletic Association (MAYAA) as well as the Mount Anthony Union high school gardening club.

Since retiring, Frost has expanded his musical career. He plays cello with the Sage City Symphony, the Union College Symphony and is part of a string quartet. Frost also plays the tuba and sings with the Frosty Four Barbershop Quartet.

Frost is active in the Bennington County Beekeeper's Club and the New England Tropical Conservatory. He has served as president of the Bennington Rotary Club twice and been a member for 32 years.

Previous honorees of the living history day are Jane Hanks, Larry Powers, Rob and Jeanne McWaters and Dick Pembroke. It provides a forum for residents, friends and interested parties to get together and celebrate, ask questions, and share in the stories and history of local lore.
